Born and raised in New York City to music-oriented parents, Utada moved to Tokyo to attend Seisen International School and American School in Japan. From there, she began writing and composing music for her debut effort. Utada, her father Teruzane Utada and producer Akira Miyake produced the album and remain her two main co-producers and composers.

It has reportedly sold over 7,650,000 copies in Japan, and 10,056,000 copies worldwide. This made First Love the album for 1999, as well as the highest-selling album in Asian music history.
