Album · 1998 · 16 Songs. After reducing things to a quiet, sad and desperate whisper for his post-divorce album Devotion + Doubt, singer-songwriter Richard Buckner returned to an acoustic, electric mix for Since. His third album includes the tougher, excited range of the opener "Believer" with its rough, chugging electric guitars and the brutal band power of "Jewelbomb" alongside the lonesome hush of "Boys, The Night Will Bury You" and the solemn folk roots of "Ariel Ramirez" and "Once
Complete your Richard Buckner collection. A competent acoustic guitarist in his own right, Buckner's third and best album "Since" aptly washes away the country genre label that's been tattooed on his forehead since the release of '97s "Devotion and Doubt. The Rock is provided by John David Foster on guitar - the Roll by indie-rock greats John McEntire (drums, percussion - making good on the promise as one of the best); David Grubbs (piano, harmonium, organ) and Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar).
Richard Buckner (born Woolwich, London, 25 October 1812; died 12 August 1883), was an English portrait painter. Buckner was the son of an army officer and grandson of Admiral Charles Buckner. Buckner first worked in a studio in his family home, Whyke House, Rumboldswhyke, Chichester. After serving in the army in 1832 and 1833 as a Second Lieutenant in The King's Royal Rifle Corps he studied painting under Giovanni Battista Cassevari in Rome
That doesn't mean Since isn't without its distressing moments; there are plenty of hushed and fragile songs here that recall the breaking tone of his previous two albums. Yet, for all of the creeping positivity going on within the grooves, Buckner sounds more weary than ever, his already delicate voice cracking under the pressure as he trudges his way through his own brand of electric folk music.
With his deep, gently blurred voice and wandering minor-chord songs, Buckner has created his most intensely beautiful and evocative album with Since. He's taken the spare sounds and textures of Devotion + Doubt, a record lauded by many but heard by few, and draped them behind a dense sonic scrim
