With Love is a studio album by Rosemary Clooney. It was released in 1980 on Concord Records. Unlike many of her Concord albums, it mixes contemporary pop (from writers like Billy Joel, Melissa Manchester and Marvin Hamlisch) with traditional pop standards. On LP, the A side featured four contemporary pop songs, while the B side was a more typical jazz and cabaret set featuring a bossa nova, two Broadway theater standards, and two 1940s pop standards. Rosemary Clooney and arranger Nelson Riddle were lovers in 1961 when this album was made. Unfortunately, the fate of the album-like the fate of the Clooney-Riddle love affair-was destined for heartbreak. Due to Clooney’s slumping record sales, RCA decided not to release the album, and Clooney decided to end her affair with Riddle and return to her husband. Love was eventually released by another label-Reprise Records, in 1963-without making the slightest impression on the Billboard Album chart. It wasn’t until 1995 that Warner Bros. Love hurts and it can stink, especially for Rosemary Clooney. This gorgeously arranged recording by Nelson Riddle has a downside to it. She feels all these songs because she had a doomed affair with him (she was married with 5 kids, he with 6), and this was also the end of their long collaboration together.
Rosemary Clooney (May 23, 1928 – June 29, 2002) was an American cabaret singer and actress. She came to prominence in the early 1950s with the novelty hit "Come On-a My House", which was followed by other pop numbers such as "Botch-a-Me", "Mambo Italiano", "Tenderly", "Half as Much", "Hey There" and "This Ole House", although she had success as a jazz vocalist. Clooney's career languished in the 1960s, partly due to problems related to depression and drug addiction, but revived in 1977, when her White Christmas co-star. Love is a 1963 studio album by Rosemary Clooney, arranged by Nelson Riddle. Clooney and Riddle were having an affair at the time of the recording, and this was the second album that Riddle had arranged for Clooney. They recorded Rosie Solves the Swingin' Riddle! in 1960 for RCA Victor Records, and the songs that make up Love were recorded the same year. RCA Victor didn't release Love at the time, and Frank Sinatra bought the master tapes for Love from RCA when he signed Clooney to his record label, Reprise Records in 1963.
