Lionel Richie had risen from saxophone player in the Commodores to lead vocalist and primary songwriter in the group. He was still with them when Endless Love director Franco Zeffirelli asked him to write an instrumental theme along the lines of Henry Mancini's theme from the 1971 film Love Story. But then Zeffirelli decided he wanted lyrics. Motown made the most of what they had recorded from Ross, and included "Endless Love" on a Diana Ross compilation album called All the Great Hits, which was also released in 1981.

Endless Love" is a song written by Lionel Richie and originally recorded as a duet between Richie and fellow R&B singer Diana Ross. In this ballad, the singers declare their "endless love" for one another. It was covered by R&B singer Luther Vandross with fellow R&B singer Mariah Carey and also by country music singer Shania Twain. Richie's friend (and sometimes co-worker) Kenny Rogers has also recorded the song. Billboard has named the original version as the greatest song duet of all-time.

And your eyes Your eyes, your eyes They tell me how much you care Ooh yes, you will always be My endless love. Two hearts, Two hearts that beat as one Our lives have just begun. Forever (Ohhhhhh) I'll hold you close in my arms I can't resist your charms And love Oh, love I'll be a fool For you, I'm sure You know I don't mind Oh, you know I don't mind. Cause you, You mean the world to me Oh I know I know I've found in you My endless love.

If you enjoyed the run of sentimental weepers that Lionel Richie made famous in the '70s and early '80s, they're all here on this anthology. Easy" and "Zoom" weren't bad slow tunes, but then Richie began to overdo the maudlin lyrics and the results became predictable and pretentious, although he certainly didn't have any problems landing chart hits for a long run. It's interesting in the '90s to rediscover these songs and have the fact that Richie wasn't really a classic (or memorable) ballad vocalist decisively reaffirmed
