Lovecraft's better known tales, 'The Music Of Erich Zann' is the second album by these German thrashers, and despite a short time between the release of the two albums, there has been some significant development regarding the sound of the band. While the overall style of the band has improved however, it lacks the same naive charm that first attracted me to the debut.

The debut album Mekong Delta was released in 1987, produced by Ralf Hubert. Due to touring duties with his current band, Jörg Michael was replaced by Uli Kusch (using the name Patrick Duval) for the shortly thereafter following picture disc EP The Gnome. Mekong Delta returned to the studio around new year 1987–1988, and recorded the concept album The Music of Erich Zann, with the same line-up, again produced by Hubert. Due to, or because of, the chosen obfuscated identities the band's big breakthrough did not happen

I don’t know if Mekong Delta’s second album, The Music of Erich Zann received such reactions back in it's release, but I’m more than willing to bet, it raised the eyebrows for many metalheads. It’s important to note that by 1988 thrash metal itself was entering into its adulthood. The underground which was the main host for Mekong Delta was flourishing with bands who took the usual speed-driven and aggressive riffing of thrash only to spice it up with complex structures, unusual timing and an input of other musical influences that gave each band a different yet recognizable sound
