Symphony No 4 In F Minor, Op 36. Conductor – Kurt SanderlingOrchestra – Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. A1. Andante Sostenuto - Moderato Con Anima. B1. Andantino In Modo Di Canzone.

Mravinsky's take on the last three Tchaikovsky symphonies makes for one of the greatest recordings ever made, and the Leningrad Philharmonic plays their hearts out - the 1960 sound is also surprisingly good, and any music lover who missed these recordings would definitely have a serious hole in their collection. Though I don't claim to know all the supposedly great performances of these works out there, Mravinsky wins hands down in comparison with any other performance I have heard in all three.

Album · 1956 · 12 Songs. 4, 5 & 6 Evgeny Mravinsky. Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64. Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra & Evgeny Mravinsky. 5. I. Andante - Allegro con anima. 6. II. Andante cantabile, con alcuna licenza - Moderato con anima. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36. Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra & Kurt Sanderling. 1. Andante sostenuto - Moderato con anima - Moderato assai, quasi andante - Allegro vivo. 3. Adagio - Allegro non troppo.

An exciting orchestra showpiece packed with memorable ideas, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth is a perennial favourite. it was Evgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded by DG on tour in London in 1960, who hit the bull’s-eye. They combined an unusually sharp profiling of dynamics and articulation with a unity of dramatic purpose. the sheer momentum of the Finale, taken 30 per cent faster than the metronome mark in the score, has never been matched, and it makes that movement - and as a result the entire work - convincing in a way that defies criticism.
