Meshuggah is a Swedish experimental metal and death metal quintet formed in 1987 in Umeå. Meshuggah is known for its use of extended polymetric passages, complex time signatures, dissonant guitar riffs, and harsh vocals. As of 2008, the band consists of vocalist Jens Kidman, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström, bassist Dick Lövgren and drummer Tomas Haake.

Although this album has some extremely heavy, soul-dismantling movements, it also provides the listener with some slow, discordant, overwhelming movements. This can be seen at 16 minutes, with an echoing, random battle of guitar and drums. As well, the end of the track is a jarring, sustained mess of feedback, a fitting conclusion to such a moving, unrelenting album. Meshuggah's I is not for everyone. THE GOOD: The instrumentation. A great introduction to Meshuggah and music of this variety. THE BAD: The length may turn some off. The casual listener will perhaps be turned off or overwhelmed by this type of music, namely this EP.

Meshuggah was formed in 1987 in Umeå, Sweden. At this time the line-up was Fredrik Thordendal – guitars, Jens Kidman – vocals, Johan Sjögren - guitars, Per Sjögren - drums and Jörgen Lindmark - bass. Jens Kidman soon left the band and started the band Calipash with bassist Peter Nordin, drummer Niclas Lundgren and guitarist Torbjörn Granström.
