Pianist, keyboardist, and composer Herbie Hancock is one of the all-time jazz greats. Born in Chicago, Illinois on April 12, 1940, he began studying piano at the age of 7 and became interested in jazz during high school. In his college years, he was torn between a career in engineering and his love of music. 8 – MR. HANDS (1980) Unjustly overlooked upon its original release, Mr. Hands is now recognized as the best album from a period in Hancock’s career that was marked by lackluster electric and disco-influenced releases. 7 – THRUST (1974) Thrust continued Hancock’s jazz fusion ventures.

This CD is a collection of Herbie Hancock's best-known work from his fusion years, beginning with two tracks from the seminal Head Hunters: the 15-minute psychedelic soul opus "Chameleon," and the African remake of "Watermelon Ma. It then traces his explorations of funk with tracks like "You Better Bet Your Love" and "Ready or Not," and his early-'80s breakout from a growing commercial/funk rut with the explosive techno-pop hit "Rockit. More importantly, it's a good example of just how much traditional jazz played a part in influencing funk, hip-hop, and even electronic music. While a retrospective is never quite as compelling as the original albums, it still serves as an exceptional introduction Hancock's work in the '70s and early '80s.

Herbie Hancock’s name should be mentioned when discussing jazz’s great musicians. He made the rhythm section of a jazz band respectable; he was one of the first jazz players to incorporate synths and funk elements into the genre, and he was an overall inventor and forward-thinker that was always seemed two steps ahead of his contemporaries. So, without further ado, here are the top ten best songs from one of jazz’s treasured artists. Disco was in the ethos of music in the late-‘70s
