This article is about ragtime music. Ragtime was an influence on early jazz; the influence of Jelly Roll Morton continued in the Harlem stride piano style of players such as James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. Dance orchestras started evolving away from Ragtime towards the big band sounds that predominated in the 1920s and 1930s when they adopted smoother rhythmic styles. There have been numerous revivals since newer styles supplanted ragtime in the 1920s. Ragtime – with Joplin's work at the forefront – has been cited as an American equivalent of the minuets of Mozart, the mazurkas of Chopin, or the waltzes of Brahms
Jazz Piano Anthology - I. .has been added to your Cart. Until he was almost 40, Jellly Roll Morton played bordello piano in various midwest and southern US cities. Fame came well into middle age, with his late 1920s Hot Peppers group. Morton was always controversial, a horn-blowing self-promoter, and spent as much effort on his image as his music. He had many critics, but was undeniably a great composer and musician.
The piano’s importance in jazz stretches back to the time of Scott Joplin, at the turn of the 19th Century, when ragtime – with its jaunty, percussive rhythms – proved an important early building block in the evolution of jazz music. From ragtime piano came the more sophisticated and virtuosic stride style of James P Johnson and Willie The Lion Smith – with its locomotive, two-step, left-hand accompaniment – in the 20s and 30s, which in turn led to Fats Waller and ultimately culminated with Art Tatum.
Part of Delta's five-part Jazz Piano Anthology, Jazz Piano Anthology: In the Beginning kicks things off with an overview of some of the most important tinklers from the early jazz and swing eras. Most of the recordings, though, are not from the eras in question, including some '50s and '60s dates by Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson. With more highlights by James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, and Fats Waller capping things off, this jazz piano collection should please fans anxious to hear some of the greats in top form.
