Paul Horn (RIP) was faced with a challenge in following up his immensely successful "Inside" LP (flute improvisations inside the Taj Mahal, exploring the extraordinary 16-second echo). Later in his career Paul would duplicate this technique inside various cathedrals, pyramids and caves but for "Inside II" he wanted to explore something different. For side 1 of the LP he wanted to play live to various natural sounds: waves, forest sounds, rain, and children playing. Inside II" instantly became a watershed album on its release, and arguably launched the entire genres of New Age and ambient soundscape recordings which followed in the 1970s and 1980s. At the very least it displays Paul's unique vision of music as a part of nature rather than apart from nature. Now that he's passed away his legacy is all we have left of him - but it remains vast and hugely important thanks in no small measure to this very album.
