Mule Variations is a great album, and that's all there is to it. Sonically, it picks up where Bone Machine left off, but drops some of that album's artifice: the clattering, trebly out- back- of- the- shed sound is still here and the inexplicable presence of Primus persists, but many of these songs find Waits relaxing his krazy karnival barker persona. But is it Tom Waits' fault that people are so hung up on those particular albums? Look, you've got two options here: you can continue to bolster your own nonexistent street cred by dissing new Tom Waits in favor of old Tom Waits, or you can give it up, admit that it's all great and increase your own personal enjoyment.

Mule Variations is Waits’ first album of his third musical career phase. It starts his years with Anti, which continue to this day up to his latest release, Real Gone. With Mule Variations, Waits continued to push the boundaries of genre, combining literary themes with jazz and modern sounds. Plus, it just plain kicked ass. Big in Japan, as the first song on the album, was a sure sign that this was not going to be a normal record.

Overall, Mule Variations is Waits' most consistent effort, even better song-for-song than Rain Dogs, and the album does a wonderful job of blending the man's two distinctly different personalities. Two different personalities" You read that right. The album kicks off with "Big in Japan," which is all Evil Tom. Creepy, distorted vocal effects kick off the song and they are quickly followed by a dirty electric guitar, New Orleans-style horns and a bass part played by Primus mastermind Les Claypool. The lyrics here are tongue-in-cheek.

Mule Variations built on the ideas of Waits’ revolutionary 80's and 90's work. It’s considered by many to be his warmest and most direct wor. .The blues abounds throughout. This album was widely acclaimed upon its release for its humanity, and its songs as a testament to Tom Waits legacy as one of the most important songwriters in America.

The discography of the American rock musician Tom Waits spans five decades. It consists of 16 studio albums, 3 live albums, 7 compilation albums, 24 singles and 2 soundtracks. Waits has also released one video album and 11 music videos. Waits's debut release was the 1973 single "Ol' '55", which was the lead single for his debut album Closing Time (1973). He began recording in 1971, but these first sessions would not be released until the beginning of the 1990s

Mule Variations is the twelfth studio album by American musician Tom Waits, released on April 16, 1999 on the ANTI- label. It was Waits's first studio album since The Black Rider (1993). It won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and was nominated for Best Male Rock Performance for the track "Hold On". It also sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide. The album was backed by an extensive tour in Europe and North America during the summer and autumn of 1999, which was Waits' first proper tour since 1987

Can anyone comment on the surface noise on this reissue? The reissue of "Closing Time" is bad.... mastering as well as surface noise, and a lot of it.

My side A has a high pitched pop, randomly throughout the side. it's annoying, and like was said before, the edges are pretty rough, they should have cleaned them up better. Sound quality isn't bad but it's not as great as I was expecting. So far, slightly disappointing.

Edit: 25th of March 2018: it's available on Newbury Comics. Buy it from them! Waaaay cheaper. It's a great sounding record. And a looker, too.

Dang! Guess I was lucky. Maybe it'll return. It did so after it sold out in January.

If only the case, sold out shortly after going online, eBay & here the only options unfortunately

sounds great. is great. and its pressed in my favorite variant.

I just got my copy yesterday, and it has a raised bump on the second side, second song. Be careful and look copies of this pressing over before playing so you avoid stylus damage. I was glad I looked first. The edges of the album were rough & messy with bits of “ribboned” vinyl still needing to be cleaned off.

My second copy was perfect - no pressing issue (I figured/hoped that was an anomoly), and the edges were nice and clean as well.

I can comfirm this records rough/messy edges, but the pressing sounds clean and very nice in generall.

New copy looks better overall. Newbury was responsive & shipped the replacement out quickly.

I did, and they wrote back today saying they sent out a replacement ????

N bump for me. Looks like isolated incidents. You should contact Newbury and get a replacement.
