Complete your Chopin - Rudolf Serkin collection. Preludes (24), Op. 28. (39:25).
Preludes (24), Op. Composed By – Chopin. Piano – Rudolf Serkin. Total duration: 49 minutes. Firstly released as CD by Sony Classical in 2005, catalog number SK 92897.
Rudolf Serkin never approved of this recording of Chopin's Preludes, Op. 28, so it was never released in his lifetime. Sony has put it out as part of its series "Rudolf Serkin - The Art of Interpretation," but some might venture to say that this Chopin is more about a lack of interpretation. According to the somewhat cryptic, anonymous liner notes, Serkin played Chopin in recitals, but almost never recorded Chopin because he felt he wasn't doing justice to the music.

By 1976 Serkin had long given up playing Chopin in public, but I ought to have known about this recording because there it is, clear as daylight, among the unreleased items listed in the excellent biography by Stephen Lehmann and Marion Faber.
