But Van Halen walked it, banging out their brilliant second album in just six days. It sounds like it, too: fresh, a little loose, fizzing with energy, its air of beer-fuelled spontaneity encapsulated in Roth’s fumbled lyric and giggles on Bottoms Up! Shrewdly, VH didn’t try to top the firepower of the debut, opting instead for a lighter, more playful vibe, running from the jammed intro to You’re No Good (such chutzpah!) to Roth’s farewell kiss on the closing Beautiful Girls. Van Halen II is lighter on landmark moments than the band's epochal debut, but largely sticks to the first album’s template apart from Eddie’s solo acoustic, Spanish Fly. They had so many facets to what they did," says producer Ted Templeman. They were always trying to evolve. I liked jazz guys like Jaco Pastorius and I would turn them on to what I liked, and I played them jazz.

Well Van Halen II, of course! And it picked up where the previous left off, if not exactly. After kicking things off with a serviceable but somewhat tight cover of a Linda Ronstadt tune, the guys kick into high gear with one of hard rocks all time great party tunes, Dance The Night Away. Its got chops, its got melody, its a good time waiting to happen. Take a chance, you're old enough to DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY" Diamond Dave sings into the mic as Eddie Van Halen lays down tasty guitar licks behind him and the boys join in with some great vocal harmonies

The third Van Halen album hit the streets in 1980. The band had a lot of live up to, coming off of the success of the first two records. With Women and Children First they knocked it out of the park. The first four songs – And the Cradle Will Rock, Everybody Wants Some, Fools and Romeo Delight – are epic Van Halen, with crushing riffs, mind-bending guitar work and catchy hooks. From there, Van Halen brought in former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone for what would become the Van Halen III album. Van Halen III wasn’t awful, but it didn’t seem like Van Halen either. The pieces just didn’t fit.
Van Halen II is the second studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released on March 23, 1979. It peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the singles "Dance the Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls". To date, it has sold over five million copies in the United States. Many of the songs on Van Halen II are known to have existed prior to the release of the first album, and are present on the demos recorded in 1976 by Gene Simmons and in 1977 by Ted Templeman, including an early version of "Beautiful Girls" (then known as "Bring On the Girls") and "Somebody Get Me a Doctor".
