The term hapa is a Native Hawaiian word which is literally translated as "part" or "mix". In Hawaii, the word refers to any person of mixed ethnic heritage, regardless of the specific mixture. In California, the term is used for any person of East Asian or Southeast Asian admixture. Therefore, the two uses are concurrent. Contemporarily, Hapa has also come to mean a person of mixed Asian and other racial heritage.
