Black Sun" (2002), Primal Fear's fourth full length album, takes what worked so well on Nuclear Fire and adds more. A little more heaviness here, a little more melody there. The result is, in my opinion, Primal Fear's best release to date. Many of the highlights on this disc are found in the first third, including the riff-laden "Armageddon", the energetic "Lightyears From Home" and the catchy mid-tempo "Revolution". One of the things I love about this CD is its diversity, while remaining very much a heavy metal album. The thrash of "Fear" soon gives way to the melodic "Magic Eye". Then comes the ultra-heavy "Mind Machine" followed by "Silence", a power ballad that doesn't skimp on the power. Sometimes the diversity is found in the same song, . "We Go Down" starts out like a ballad and then morphs into a heavy rocker.

The next album Black Sun was released on April 29, 2002 and entered the German LP charts at place 55. Halford-Guitarist Mike Chlasciak contributed the guitar solos for the songs "Fear" and "Armageddon". The highlight of the following double-headliner tour with fellow band Rage was a gig at the Scala in London. The same year Henny Wolter left the band and was replaced by the returning Tom Naumann. With this line-up the band again toured through Brazil and ended the Black Sun tour Lyrical themes. Primal Fear's lyrical themes are often a very controversial issue. Although the main lyrical motives in Primal Fear's works are metal, science fiction, and fantasy, it is often thought to be metaphorical.

With Black Sun, Primal Fear continues to use the same aggressive power/speed metal style they always have. Some my call it Priest worship, to others it is a Painkiller rip-off. To me Black Sun is a very solid collection of my favourite music genre. Melody, power, and heaviness are all important to the Primal Fear formula, as is quality song writing. With plenty of excellent riffs, aggressive attitudes, and classy song writing, Primal Fear's 2002 effort is easily an album worth owning. German power metal is one of my favourite sub-genres of metal, and it's due to albums such as these that I return time and time again. Black Sun is a very fun album to listen to, and I recommend it to everyone.
