Why There Are Mountains is an independently released studio album by the indie rock band Cymbals Eat Guitars. The album was initially self-released, then re-released after the band signed to Sister's Den Records in late 2009. All tracks written by Joseph D'Agostino. The following people contributed to Why There Are Mountains. Daniel Baer – keyboards, piano. Neil Berenholz – Bass. Joseph D'agostino – guitar, vocals, composer.

As its followed by "What Dogs See", four minutes of echoing rubble and near spoken-word mumbles, it initially seems like a pokey bit of sequencing, but the song evolves into a prelude to the deceptively bouncy "Wind Phoenix", which turns personal devastation into a sing-along. What's most admirable about this sophisticated self-released debut is Cymbals Eat Guitars' willingness to think big with gestures that shouldn't fly in the hands of a young band, instrumentally or thematically. Occasionally, albeit rarely, it leads them astray, as in the closer "Like Blood Does", where the group dawdles a bit too long before reaching its arresting conclusion.

Listen free to Cymbals Eat Guitars – Why There are Mountains . .and the Hazy Sea, Some Trees (Merritt Moon) and more). Well, we'd best put a halt to the Velvets nods so as not to mislead you.

Cymbals Eat Guitars steal brashly: "Cold Spring," for example, ruptures into what the band could only have referred to in practice as "the Modest Mouse part," all perverse locomotion and hoarse bleating, while the ramshackle wordiness of "Indiana" evokes Stephen Malkmus plainly, without reservation And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead guitarissimo and noble falcons of Sufjan Stevens brass. These guys are second-rate thieves, in other words, stealing at will but without the authorial command to make these goods their own.
