Surfin’ USA. The Beach Boys. Produced by Nick Venet. If everybody had an ocean Across the U. S. A Then everybody'd be surfin' Like Californi-a You'd see them wearing their baggies Huarachi sandals too A bushy bushy blond hairdo Surfin' U. A. You'd catch 'em surfin' at Del Mar (Inside, outside, USA) Ventura County line (Inside, outside, USA) Santa Cruz and Trestles (Inside, outside, USA) Australia's Narrabeen (Inside, outside, USA) All over Manhattan (Inside, outside, USA) And down Doheny Way (Inside, outside).
This is hand's down the band's weakest album until "Carl and The Passions". There aren't many highlights to the album since 5 of the 12 tracks are "surf" instrumentals. Aside from "Surfin USA" and "Shut Down", the main highlight of this album is "Lonely Sea" and that's mostly because that was an album only track. I also enjoy the cover of "Misirlou", but that's really it aside from those 3 Beach Boys original highlights
The Beach Boys' debut album, recorded in an era in which little was expected of rock groups in the way of strong LP-length statements, is mostly thin and awkward in both the songwriting and production departments. The title track, their first true smash, is great, as is its flip side ("409"), which was not only a hit in its own right, but was the first vocal hot rod classic. Surfin'," their debut single (and small national hit), is also good, and one of the few Beach Boys tracks that could be said to have a garage-like quality
The LP was named for being their 20th overall album release. Much of it consists of outtakes from earlier albums.
