The Smiths is the eponymous debut studio album by English rock band the Smiths, released on 20 February 1984 by Rough Trade Records. After the original production by Troy Tate was felt to be inadequate, John Porter re-recorded the album in London, Manchester and Stockport during breaks in the band's UK tour during September 1983. The album was well received by critics and listeners, and reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying on the chart for 33 weeks

This whole E.P. is reminiscent of the kind of music The Black Dog, B12, Ubik aka Hi-Ryze were making in the very early days. Triumphant is probably my favourite. Full of melodic, deep, layered harmonious creativity. But listen to that warm, rumbling bassline contorting into all manner of shapes. Very early use of the now famous Reese bassline or at least ever so similar. Can't say for sure if it was sampled outright and manipulated or created from scratch, but it's evidently there.

"X-Square" is the joint here, classic bleepy UK rave music, beautiful otherwordly simplicity with some extra depth and mystery provided by mega-low frequency subbass and the emotional pad sequence that connects it to both Detroit and some Larry Heard/Mr Fingers deepness.
