Louis Marshall Jones (October 20, 1913 – February 19, 1998), known professionally as Grandpa Jones, was an American banjo player and "old time" country and gospel music singer. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Born in the farming community of Niagara in Henderson County, Kentucky, Jones spent his teenage years in Akron, Ohio, where he began singing country music tunes on a radio show on WJW. In 1931, Jones joined the Pine Ridge String Band, which provided the musical accompaniment for the very popular Lum and Abner show.

Popular music of the United States in the 1980s saw new wave entering the year as the single biggest mainstream market, with heavy metal, punk rock and hardcore punk, and hip hop achieving increased crossover success. With the demise of punk rock, a new generation of punk-influenced genres arose, including Gothic rock, post-punk, alternative rock, emo and thrash metal. Hip hop underwent its first diversification, with Miami bass, Chicago hip house, Washington, .

More than likely casual music lovers will only want the "big hits" from a certain era anyway, and will find the individual sets more to their liking and in line with their budgets. Hey Leroy, Your Mama's Callin' You. The Jimmy Castor Bunch.

Many younger music fans in particular consider '80s music irredeemably cheesy, and in many cases they are correct. But like all musical decades, there is another layer of music that by and large didn't fit neatly into Top 40 playlists (at least in the US). My first question: What is alternative? As it pertains to '80s music, or any other decade for that matter, the answer is never really quite clear. Of course, it also depends on the artist, the album, the country, or even the listener. There are songs that hit the top of the singles chart in the UK or elsewhere in the world - the Boomtown Rats' 1979 classic "I Don't Like Mondays", for example, the Jam's "A Town Called Malice", or David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" - which had zero chance of ever becoming a mainstream hit in America. It was the Chili Peppers' biggest hit until three years later, when their timeless ballad "Under the Bridge" lodged at on the pop chart.
