Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue. It's too bad Rhapsody in Blue is not up to the standard of the Concerto in F. There is so much competition on this title that anything less than great doesn't even get out of the gate, and Mantovani's rubbery tempo, cheesy trumpets, and added string doublings stick out like sore thumbs in a piece of music that is now. so terribly familiar. Katchen doesn't seem to be quite on his game, either; he gets his fingers knotted up at one point, and is wholly out of sync with the orchestra in the big sendoff. Rhapsody in Blue, for piano & orchestra (orchestrated by F. Grofé). blue highlight denotes track pick.

The Three Preludes for Piano, Rhapsody in Blue, and An American in Paris ARE the passageway, and this disc presents the latter two in performances by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on this splendid Telarc disc from 1981. Rhapsody in Blue is one of Gershwin’s signature compositions. It was composed in 3 weeks in 1924 in response to a commission for a jazz concerto by Paul Whiteman for his orchestra. Two years later, Ferde Grofe revised the work for symphony orchestra. To say that Rhapsody in Blue became a success is a gross understatement.
George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. Among his best known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935). Gershwin studied piano under Charles Hambitzer and composition with Rubin Goldmark and Henry Cowell.
