Green Day was originally recording an album called Cigarettes and Valentines, but after the master tapes were stolen, Green Day ought to start over from scratch and created the album we see today. The band took a three-month break and started from scratch to make American Idiot instead. In 2016 it was confirmed they found the Master Tapes for Cigarettes and Valentines but they aren’t going to publicly release them and instead use them as a basis for new songs. American Idiot Q&A

American Idiot is the seventh studio album by American rock band Green Day. Produced by Rob Cavallo, the album was released in the UK on September 20, 2004 and in the US on September 21, 2004 by Reprise Records. Green Day first achieved popularity in the 1990s with a string of successful albums. Following disappointing sales of their sixth album, Warning (2000), the band took a break before recording their next album, titled Cigarettes and Valentines. The recording process was cut short when the album’s master tapes were stolen

It is considered one of the band's signature songs.

Artist: Green Day. Album: American Idiot. 13 songs, Page 1 of 1. Song. 44100 kHz. 28778 Times.

Green Day were always innately suburban. THC and apathy themed their 1994 single "Longview"; their breakthrough album, Dookie, was a precocious jumble of power chords and smart aleck prurience, a blend of The Descendents and flinty Buzzcockian spark. They didn't have any answers- they just wanted weed and entitlement. But Idiot's slicing power chordage reaches to Green Day's old English and Cali punk influences with tingling fingers, adds acoustic instruments without sounding forced or contrived, and lyrically grapples with the cultural predicaments and awkward shittiness of "subliminal mind-fuck America," circa 2004: "Now everybody do the propaganda/ And sing along in the age of paranoia. Armstrong delivers the title track couplet like a command at the revolution day sock-hop, and its instrumental viciousness is enough to shatter punchbowl glass.
