Y Dydd Olaf is the first solo album by Welsh singer-songwriter Gwenno. It was her fifth solo release after four previous EPs. The album was initially released on a small scale by the independent Peski Records label in October 2014 and sold out completely. It was re-released worldwide in 2015 by Heavenly Recordings.
At worst, it's treated as a novelty, a fate that you can only hope doesn't befall Cardiff-born Gwenno Saunders' debut solo album, reissued this week on Heavenly after its initial appearance on local label Peski last year. In July 2015, Gwenno re-released her first full-length solo album, entitled Y Dydd Olaf (which translates to The Last Day ), on Heavenly Recordings. While it no longer carries the catchy, cheer-type style of The Pipettes, Gwenno’s latest offering dwells more on the soft and sparse soundscape of Synthpop music-less organic and less playful yet more mature in musical approach and serious in terms of delivery and lyrical content.
Gwenno is firmly in charge of her sound and presentation from the beginning, and Y Dydd Olaf is wonderfully assured throughout. Any one of the bands she calls influences should be proud to have inspired her; she's made an album that's worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as all of them.
Y Dydd Olaf is a marvellously magical mixture of elation, anger and sorrow and is very lovely indeed. With the opening salvo of her solo career Gwenno has added another album to the growing list of this year’s highlights.
