They continue to evolve on A Weekend in the City, an unashamedly ambitious, emotional album that builds on where they've been before but still feels like a departure. Silent Alarm's eclecticism was one of its biggest strengths; not knowing exactly which Bloc Party you were going to get from song to song - arty punks, unabashed romantics, or righteously angry rockers - made for thrilling listening. They make the earnest, anthemic sound that was on the fringes of Silent Alarm the heart of A Weekend in the City, and it works remarkably well. It helps that the band's feelings are.

Computer programs were extensively used to enrich and amend recorded takes, while a string sextet was hired to perform on some of the tracks. The subject matter of frontman and chief lyricist Kele Okereke's lyrics for A Weekend in the City covers issues such as drug use, sexuality, and terrorism. All band members of Bloc Party conceived A Weekend in the City during 2005 while on tour in support of their critically acclaimed debut album Silent Alarm. Despite missing their home city of London, the quartet became increasingly disillusioned with the culture in the area each time they sporadically returned.

Bloc Party’s first full length 2005’s Silent Alarm glistened with a stylish urban aura and in the same way as Blur always did, it felt like a London record. Where as Oasis are distinctly northern in its approach to lyrics and song writing, Bloc Party felt like what it in essence was; four southern kids making a splendid indie pop record. Silent Alarm of course lacked direction and the songs seemed to be coming from all angles and while the Bloc Party buffet offered a wide variety of choices what it didn’t offer was a really cohesive album with a solid flow. Otherwise don't even start, which I feel sums up Bloc Party’s approach to A Weekend in the City. It is a vastly changed record form Silent Alarm, the band clearly wanted to set themselves apart and they sure have done.

Can anyone comment on the quality of this release? .

It sounds pretty good, although it is compressed somewhat. Its not as open sounding as my UK pressing of Silent alarm. I would guess the UK pressing of this would sound better, but if you can get a reasonably priced copy of the US pressing - it would be good.
