What Kind of World" is another beautifully crafted work of art from Raconteurs bassist and vocalist Brendan Benson, his fifth album in a long line of quality releases. Benson presents to the listener a dozen top-quality songs that, after my fifth or sixth listen to the album, will be gracing my ears for years to come. The album clocks in at around 40 minutes of music, which is nearly the exact length as his 2009 release "My Old Familiar Friend" (which is, not to devalue "What Kind of World," Benson's best album).

Michigan-born Brendan Benson's no exception. His best record, 1996's One Mississippi- the one that was supposed to launch him into the alt-rock stratosphere- has one of those classic mid-1990s major label tales: Virgin Records didn't hear a hit and made him re-record it, scrimped on the promotional backing once he did, and promptly dropped him when the record. His fifth, What Kind of World, finds him playing the rock'n'roll loser once again, and occasionally meriting the Alex Chilton haircut he sports on its cover. Here it goes again/ Another losing streak," he drawls on "Bad For Me", the pleasantly melodic if aurally nondescript lead-off single, "Guess I'm on a roll. On the more keyed-up title track, he barks a similarly discouraged refrain, "What kind of world/ Would take me apart/ Before I can start?"

Brendan Benson is a Michigan-born songwriter who resides on the rock end of the power pop scale. He debuted in 1996 with One Mississippi at the age of 25. Jason Falkner of Jellyfish and The Grays co-wrote and produced the first version of the record which was rejected by the label so Brendan went back into the studio with Ethan Johns. The album received critical acclaim and is often cited by musicians as an influence. One Mississippi was later reissued digitally and included six original four-track demos. The album debuted at No. 110 on the Billboard Top 200 boosted by the single A Whole Lot Better. In 2012, Brendan released What Kind of World. Featuring the single "Bad for Me," Brendan’s fantasy label Readymade Records became a reality. It peaked at No. 7 on the UK Indie Album chart the week of release.
