The Congress was a band that was composed of John Darnielle (of The Mountain Goats) and Mark Givens (of Wckr Spgt), as well as various other musicians throughout its history. Little is known of The Congress-in fact, their very existence is disputed. The songwriting process of The Congress was that Givens would come up with a song title, and then Darnielle would write a song based around the phrase or word. Givens and Darnielle would record "five or six songs a session", often while drinking heavily.
