This later-period Fall album showed that Smith hadn’t yet run out of ideas. The album featured more electronic accents, and rock-hard riffing. The dangerous goth swing of Mountain Energei brought to mind Depeche Mode in their prime, except Smith spins out baffling lines about Dolly Parton and patriotism. 8. Slates/A Part of America Therein (1981). The Fall’s second full-length album, the first featuring guitarist Craig Scanlon and new bassist Steve Hanley, showcased some of Smith’s darkest lyrics. The album had a creepy feel, accented by the stark black-and-white cover art sporting an eerie drawing of a spider. The slow, relentless acceleration of Muzorewi’s Daughter, punctuated by Smith’s shrieks, was one of the most terrifying Fall songs of them all, and the song Spectre vs. Rector felt like gazing directly into the abyss.
Slates was the band’s second album on Rough Trade, released on 10″ vinyl in April 1981. It serves as a six track tasting plate that teases much of the stylistic ground they would cover in the three years leading up to The Wonderful Frightening World o. nd the Beggars Banquet era. A sort of intrigue sits on this EP, as well as in Adrian Sherwood’s production work. Extricate is as close to a break-up album as The Fall have ever come – though I’m sure saying so will make the most loyal followers bay for this writer’s blood. The first record to be released following Brix’s divorce from Smith and her departure from the band, Extricate‘s sound is devoid of the melodic sensibilities she had provided, with dour, severe minimalism working its way back to the fore.
The most exciting releases of the season ahead. Photo: Photos courtesy of artists. Collage by Stevie Remsberg. This summer, just about every A-list musician released an album. In less than three months, we got releases from Drake, Kanye West, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Eminem, some more Kanye West, Ariana Grande, and some other things connected to Kanye West, among many, many others. If we learned anything from the experience, it’s that we are finally out of artists to write about. Music is closed! Thank you for your time
