The Dave Brubeck Quartet was anchored by Brubeck himself and Paul Desmond, but the rhythm section had several changes while they were taking jazz to fans in college. In March 1953, the exciting Oberlin album had Ron Crotty on bass and Lloyd Davis at drums. By December 1953, for the College of the Pacific concerts, Joe Dodge took over percussion. In 1954, Bob Bates was the bassist. On this album, recorded in 1957, Joe Morello is the drummer, and as the tracks demonstrate, it was a wise decision. By the time the milestone album Time Out was recorded in 1959, the bassist was Eugene Wright
As a sort-of follow-up to Jazz Goes To College (which was actually recorded three years earlier) and the final album in his "college" series, pianist Dave Brubeck and his Quartet (with altoist Paul Desmond, bassist Norman Bates and drummer Joe Morello) recorded at Fullerton Junior College in 1957.
