The mandolin has been quite prominent in bluegrass and Irish/Celtic music, but in jazz, mandolin players have been few and far between. Even if Masefield (who plays the tenor banjo as a second instrument) used his mandolin for nothing but Charlie Parker classics and stuck to standard bebop chord changes, this album would be unusual because not many improvisers have used the mandolin for that sort of thing.
If The Project is any indication, however, I may be on my way to Burlington very soon, for when I eventually relented and listened to the album, I was pleasantly surprised! This was not the solo to "Maggie May" or even the backing basis of "Mandolin Wind" (from which many come to know and consider the mandolin as a popular instrument)

The Jazz Mandolin Project was an acoustic jazz fusion group formed in Burlington, Vermont, by Jamie Masefield in 1993. Masefield played banjo with dixieland bands, including the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, before switching to mandolin. In 1996, the debut album consisted of Gabe Jarrett on drums and Stacey Starkweather on bass. The following year the group broke up, and Masefield kept the name with different musicians: bassist Chris Dahlgren and drummer Jon Fishman from Phish. They recorded the next album, Tour de Flux. The Project's next album, Xenoblast was on Blue Note Records, though it was less a jazz album and more improvisational jazz rock, featuring the guitarist Trey Anastasio of Phish.
