Alice in Chains (often abbreviated as AIC) is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney, who later recruited bassist Mike Starr and lead vocalist Layne Staley. Starr was replaced by Mike Inez in 1993. William DuVall joined the band in 2006 as co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, replacing Staley, who died in 2002. The band took its name from Staley's previous group, the glam metal band Alice N' Chains.

We Die Young", "Man in the Box", "Bleed the Freak" and "Sea of Sorrow" were released as singles. Man In The Box" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal in 1992.
When Alice in Chains' debut album, Facelift, was released in 1990, about a year before Nirvana's Nevermind, the thriving Seattle scene barely registered on the national musical radar outside of underground circles (although Soundgarden's major-label debut, Louder Than Love, was also released that year and brought them a Grammy nomination). That started to change when MTV jumped all over the video for "Man in the Box," giving the group a crucial boost and helping to pave the way for grunge's popular explosion toward the end of 1991.

Facelift is the debut studio album by the American rock band Alice In Chains. The album was the first grunge album to be certified platinum and has gone on to be certified double-platinum by the RIAA for shipments of two million copies in the United States. Local promoter Randy Hauser became aware of the band at a concert, and offered to pay for demo recordings.
In 1990, Alice in Chains released their first LP entitled Facelift. The second track of the album called Man in the Box was their first hit and is THE song that made them famous. Although AIC are reputed as being members of the whole Seattle grunge scene, their debut is more of a hardrock/ metal album. In fact, when I bought this a little more than two years ago, I had never heard of the band and after listening to this I thought that they were a metal band. Grunge was the last thing I would of thought of. The riffs are heavy, the mood is dark, and the slower songs seem hauntingly despairing.
