The Grammy Award for Best Rap Album is an award presented to recording artists for quality albums with rapping at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony that was established in 1958 and originally called the Gramophone Awards.

Fat Boys is the self-titled first studio album by hip hop group The Fat Boys on May 29, 1984 by Sutra Records. Album was produced by Kurtis Blow. LP is dedicated to the memory of Rebecca Wimbely and William (Divine) Santos. Album peaked at number 48 on the US Billboard 200, and number 6 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on May 6, 1985.

The Beastie Boys turned to full-band hip-hop on 1992's Check Your Head, a heavier album on which the three players augmented their guitar-bass-drum parts with colorful percussion and atmospheric electronic production. Unsurprisingly, this record had a rawer punk feel, as did several moments on their next LP, 1994's Ill Communication, most notably "Tough Guy" and the goofy "Sabotage. Ill Communication overall had a conscious, old-school hip-hop vibe featuring hints of jazz, reggae, psych-rock and electro. Two songs even sampled Tibetan monks, which led to the creation of the nonprofit Milarepa Fund to raise funds for and awareness about the country's fight for independence from China. The fund pointed to the Beastie Boys' growing concern for social issues.

Then came the Beastie Boys in 2012. The group started out as a punk act, then moved to rap, where they incorporated classic rock samples into their recordings to great commercial success. Public Enemy, who joined the next year, was another great induction. They have always maintained a rock mentality in their music but also brought a sense of social activism to rap as well. West Coast rap icons . A proved to be the Hall's most controversial inductees. In 2007, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious were the first rap act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The South Bronx group are the pioneers of early rap with their socially-conscious songs like The Message and the anti-cocaine track White Lines. Meanwhile, Grandmaster Flash would become a visionary behind the turntables with his skills at break-beating.
