Velvet Crush is an American power pop band from Providence, Rhode Island, United States, that achieved prominence in indie-rock circles in the early- and mid-1990s. The band broke up in 1996 but re-formed in 1998 and have continued to record, releasing their most recent album in 2004.
Velvet Crush's first and best album was mistakenly lumped in with the then-predominant shoegazer aesthetic upon its release in 1991, thanks to its British release on the shoegazer-central Creation label and the occasional washes of sparkly electric feedback and creamy-smooth harmonies that settle over some of the songs. However, this album, produced by the band and Matthew Sweet (who also added lead guitar and harmonies), is actually a straight-up piece of '90s power pop.
Listen free to Velvet Crush – In The Presence Of Greatness (Window to the World, Drive Me Down and more). The debut album release. Recorded in Matthew Sweet's living room? (so says the liner notes) Sweet produced it. Released in 1991, there are close similarities to the songwriting on the better-known "Teenage Symphonies to God" (1994), although this is decidedly more lo-fi and garagey sounding.
