Sándor Kónya (September 23, 1923 – May 20, 2002) was a Hungarian tenor, particularly associated with German and Italian roles, especially Lohengrin and Calaf. Kónya was born in Sarkad, Hungary, and began his vocal studies at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, with Ferenc Székelyhidy. Kónya left only a small number of commercial recordings, including a 1963 Die Fledermaus, under Oskar Danon; a 1965 Lohengrin, under Erich Leinsdorf, both for RCA Victor, an aria recital for Deutsche Grammophon (Il Trovatore, Meistersinger, Lohengrin, L'elisir d'amore, Martha, et., and a recital of songs by Wagner and Verdi, with Otto Guth at the piano (MCA).
The Lohengrin here, Sandor Konya, meets Rysanek's beauty and intensity note-for-note. The orchestra is beautifully led by Cluytens. From the evocative opening bars of the prelude, you know you're in store for hours of beautiful music. This album also includes some extras of Rysanek: Senta's ballade from Die Fliegender Hollander of 1959 Bayreuth and a couple scenes from Die Walkure with the Siegmund of Jon Vickers. Again, both extras in fine sound. The included booklet has some brief notes on this opera and the performance.

But if one Lohengrin mesmerized me apart from the winning recording, that was the first Sándor Kónya. I’m in love with him as much as with Lovberg. He steals my heart both in Act I and III.
