Schubert & the Classics. Thomas Hampson (baritone), Graham Johnson (piano). Download all MP3 £. 9. Download all FLAC £. Schubert was to show off his classical education again in his letters, and this was in May 1819 in writing to Anselm Hüttenbrenner, for whom he had made the album leaf inscription of Cicero in 1817. Hüttenbrenner had gone to live in Graz (a town which, eight years later, Schubert was to learn to love).

Here the roles are reversed: Hampson takes center stage, and McLaughlin assists, this time in a program of poetry largely by Mayrhofer, and concerned almost exclusively with the theme of ancient Greece. As always, the variety and abundance of Schubert's inspiration is astounding, and Graham Johnson's notes make very interesting reading. -David Hurwitz In volume 13 of this magnificent series of Schubert songs, Thomas Hampson played a supporting role to soprano Marie McLaughlin's recital.

Release group information. Artist: Franz Schubert; Thomas Hampson, Graham Johnson.

Schubert and the Classics. Thomas Hampson (baritone), Marie McLaughlin (soprano), Graham Johnson (piano). Catalogue No: CDJ33014. Schubert: Die Gotter Griechenlands D677 (Schiller). Schubert: Amphiaraos D166 (Komer).

Atys, D. 585. Graham Johnson & Thomas Hampson.

Of course, there's no shortage of either in German Romantic poetry, and Schubert never loses his ability to catch the mood of his poems with just a few bars of introductory music.

Anthony Rolfe Johnson. Piano, Primary Artist.
