His recordings of Jerome Kern's hits (two LPs on a 70-minute-plus CD) are among the best work he ever did. The sound is moody and lush, without being overwhelmingly sweet - the achingly beautiful melodic nuances of a piece like "You Are Love" still come through amid the harps and strings, even if it's better to hear it sung
Album of Jerome Kern. Kern-Weston alchemy produced a Desert Island Disc, still the finest Kern compilation ever made, and simultaneously a mood music classic. The layout is luxe and very smart, with the familiar Broadway songs-including "The touch of your hand" and the operatic "The song is you"-occupying the first half and the film songs (some comparatively rare) concluding the programme
Kern's long, fluid vocal lines? Porter's are just as long. In fact, each of these composers has written songs that bear some earmarks of the Kern style: Gershwin's "But Not For Me," Porter's "Why Shouldn't I?," Rodgers' "By and B. And one can see in Kern's catalogue indirect return compliments: to Gershwin, "The Siren's Song"; to Porter, "Remind Me"; to Rodgers, "Long Ago and Far Away. Complexity leads paradoxically to simplicity. And this hard-won simplicity is, I think, the keynote of Jerome Kern's style. His melodies are as smooth, rounded, streamlined, simplified and undecorated as a cigar. The price of the cigar may vary as the quality of his inspiration may change, but his inferior work has the same cigar-like perfection as his best.
