Vihma is Värttinä's 7th album, released in 1998. It is primarily pop- and rock-influenced Finnish folk music. However, three tracks (6, 8 and 9) also include Tuvan throat singing. Vihma was initially released by Wicklow Entertainment in the United States and Finland. Later in 1998, it was released in Japan by BMG Japan. The first one with the pithy name Värttinä , was released as a self-financed album in the summer of 1987. They were busy making it after Värttinä was chosen to be the band of the year in Kaustinen folk music festival and they didn’t have their own recording yet.
That makes this all the more welcome, since Vihma, if not a return to the way things were, is at least a definite way out of the cul-de-sac. They lay their manifesto on the line with the opening title track, which crams in samples, programmed beats, a strong studio feel around an in- your-face attitude, as if to say, "We're back.
