Annie Haslam (born 8 June 1947 in Bolton, Lancashire, England) is an English vocalist, songwriter, and painter. She is best known as the lead singer of progressive rock band Renaissance since 1971, and for her long and diverse solo singing career. She has a five-octave vocal range. From 2002, Haslam has developed a parallel career as a visual artist, producing paintings on canvas, painted musical instruments, and giclées.
In the battle of "dueling Renaissances," Annie Haslam's Renaissance definitely won the battle. Along with Still Life, this is her best solo project ever. A great pop album, a great Annie Haslam album, and a great Renaissance album. What more could you ask for? Essential listening.
Songwriter Interviews. Annie Haslam of Renaissance. Having a conversation with Annie Haslam is like going for a walk with Usain Bolt. Renaissance was formed by former Yardbirds Keith Relf and Jim McCarty in 1969. Two years later, they left and Annie joined the band along with Michael Dunford, bassist Jon Camp, and keyboard player John Tout. With songs written by Dunford with the lyricist Betty Thatcher, the group released the highly acclaimed albums Turn Of The Cards and Scheherezade And Other Stories (both in 1975), and toured extensively.
Well the representation of the best stuff by Renaissance, passing through a great performance regarding a famous live in Japan, it's the best way to revive the best moments within Annie's long career!!Her warm voice, as well as the contribution of Michael Dunford and Terry Sullivan together once again, help the band to make flourish the symphonic breaks. While that studio album was not very impressive, these new songs work rather well here in the context of the many older songs. On disc one there are several songs that certainly will be recognized by anyone familiar with the band, including Carpet Of The Sun, Midas Man, and Northern Lights. On this disc we also get to hear two songs from Annie Haslam's solo album The Dawn Of Ananda. The first of these is Precious One which for me is the low point of the whole show. The second one, Ananda, has an Oriental feel and is not bad.
