Soul Trash follows in the vein of other self-released mixtape projects from Toro, such as 2015’s Samantha, which was also released via Dropbox.

Chaz Bear (born Chazwick Bradley Bundick; November 7, 1986), known professionally as Toro y Moi, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and graphic designer. His music has taken on many forms since he began recording, but he is often identified with the rise of the chillwave movement in 2010 and 2011. His stage name is a multilingual expression consisting of the Spanish words toro and y (meaning "bull" and "and", respectively) and the French word moi (meaning "me").

Toro y Moi has allowed Chaz Bear to have a successful career as a multi-hyphenate artist, but the brand now extends beyond music. Read the interview here. Bear fully recognizes that Toro y Moi is bigger than himself, which is why the foundation of Outer Peace is coming from a place of designing a really good album as opposed to getting all of these emotions out. In a way, he’s sort of been deconstructing what it means to be a DIY artist in the modern age. For this record, Bear took a step back from being fully in charge of the graphic design aspects of the record so he could focus on other things like tour production and stage design, in addition to giving the music his full attention so he could finish the project.
