Sun Ra And His Omniverse Jet-Set Arkestra ‎– Beyond The Purple Star Zone, Oblique Parallax. Reissue of "Beyond The Purple Star Zone" (Saturn 123180) & Oblique Parallax (Saturn 72881). Recorded live at the Detroit Jazz Center December 26 1980 - January 1 1981. There's a curious anomaly here. They use exactly the same recording, made on December 31 1980. The two Saturn LPs on which they featured were released in quick succession, in 1981 and 1982.

Despite the technological limitations, Ra used some innovative recording techniques, and these recordings provided an unprecedented level of documentation, and were inspirational in showing how artists could take control of the means of production and distribution of their works. Notes

Reissue of "Beyond The Purple Star Zone" (Saturn 123180) & Oblique Parallax (Saturn 72881).

Recorded live at the Detroit Jazz Center December 26 1980 - January 1 1981.

There's a curious anomaly here. The opening track of this CD, "Beyond The Purple Star Zone", is identical to the first section of the closing track, "Journey Stars Beyond". They use exactly the same recording, made on December 31 1980. The two Saturn LPs on which they featured were released in quick succession, in 1981 and 1982.
Sun Ra evidently rated this particular trio performance highly – it features himself, Vincent Chancey and Samarai Celestial – so much so that "Beyond The Purple Star Zone" reappeared on the second LP as the opening part of "Journey Stars Beyond." The second section of “Journey Stars Beyond” was recorded during the previous night's concert. The other tracks included on this CD were also recorded during the many concerts of this December 26 1980 – January 1 1981 Detroit Jazz Center residency.
