Ars Antiqua Austria/Letzbor (Pan Classics). A colourful figure in late 17th-century Italy, Carlo Ambrogio Lonati sang comic roles in Cavalli operas, was perhaps the lover of Stradella (possibly involved in his murder), and earned the nickname of the Queen’s hunchback while a violinist in the service of Queen Christina of Sweden.

Carlo Ambrogio Lonati. Lonati: Sonate da chiesa. Ars Antiqua Austria, Letzbor. A few years ago, Gunar Letzbor recently re-discovered his works together with the Ars Antiqua Austria, with thrilling results. This is highly graceful music, with virtuoso violin voices and captivating harmonic tensions. Letzbor opts for precision and musical expression over tempo. A little less church hall-echo would have been preferable.
Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, a flamboyant character in the Italian violin scene, was born in Milan and moved to Rome at age 25, where he became known as the 'hunchback of the Queen' Christina of Sweden. His stature predestined him as a singer for roles of gnomes and dwarves at the Rome Opera. Corelli played for a few years in the orchestra directed by Lonati, as its concertmaster. These masterpieces were dedicated to the Emperor, Leopold I. Lonati’s virtuosity comes close to that of Biber whose works Ars Antiqua Austria have also championed. The power of expression in his music is surprising, although he cannot disavow the sunny origins of his Italian soul. Carlo Ambrogio Lonati (1645-1712). 01. Violin Sonata No. 1 in D Major: I. Sostenuto-Largo 02. 1 in D Major: II.
