Seventh Tree is the fourth studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp. It was released on 22 February 2008 by Mute Records. It was named after a dream Alison Goldfrapp had about a "very large tree". Taking inspiration from paganism and surreal English children's books, Goldfrapp described the album as a "sensual counterpoint to the glitterball glamour of Supernature", their previous studio album from 2005.

Released in 2008, the album marked a shift in direction for the duo, out was the heavy, buzzing glam sound of their previous two records, and in were acoustic guitars and harps, with warm sounds inspired by the british countryside and traditional English children’s books. About this change in sound, the duo told iheartberlin.

However, Seventh Tree isn't so much a radical change for Goldfrapp as it is a shift in focus; even if it doesn't sound glam, it sounds glamorous

Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree. Mute) UK release date: 25 February 2008. Supernature was Goldfrapp’s breakthrough album and defined Alison as a leading exponent of ‘pervtronica’ (especially when dressed as some kind of dominatrix and attempting to have sex with a theremin). The sound of the album was so influential that even pop poppet Rachel Stevens made a single with Some Girls. Seventh Tree is the equivalent of a spring clean – out goes the thumping electro beats and thinly veiled allusions to sexuality, and in comes autumnal, pastoral folk, orchestral ballads, and pretty little songs about heartbreak.

Seventh Tree unveils an Alison Goldfrapp quite different to the one we saw on her career highpoint to date, 2005's Supernature. Whereas that album was grandiose, glammy, and almost aggressive in its brash, thrusting sexuality, Goldfrapp's fourth album is no less sensual, but rather more subtle in its approach. Recorded with longtime collaborator Will Gregory out in rural Somerset, Seventh Tree feels like an attempt to fuse the pagan folk of cult English horror classic The Wicker Man< to a lush backdrop of woozy electronics and a restrained orchestral sweep reminiscent.

Seventh Tree is Goldfrapp unplugged. It is a digital folk album. It is hand-knitted synth pop played around a campfire on dulcimers and autoharps and harmoniums. It leaves you grasping for surprisingly arcane references. But full dibs to Goldfrapp as they steam through the space-time continuum in their glitter-plated time machine. It’s a pleasure to hear them retreat from a futuristic utopia of anti-gravity scooters and orgasmatrons and head for rural idyll in 13th century Albion. This album seriously needs to be reissued on vinyl.I would have absolutely no hesitation in buying it if it was done as well as the reissue of Felt Mountain( the european pressing on white vinyl)

I don't care about the other electronica Goldfrapp albums but this one is totally different. It's more singer-songwriter album. Amazing and perfect. Absolute classic. 5/5

Need reissue - love this record.

I'll be honest: when I first heard SEVENTH TREE, I thought, 'What the...?' Goldfrapp is nothing but surprising; whereas BLACK CHERRY and SUPERNATURE were both steeped in dance music, SEVENTH TREE finds its roots in English folk-pop. But, with repeated listens, the album grew on me. And now? I think it stands up. Goldfrapp's voice is given a new texture to work with, and on "Clowns," it sounds more ethereal than ever against a backdrop of plucked guitars and pulled strings. The elecctronics are still there, but used much more subtly, like the quiet tweeting on "Little Bird" that quickly turns cosmic. The filters on "Eat Yourself" make it sound like a crackly vinyl dug up from someone's basement somewhere, while "A&E" goes for the bucolic. "Cologne Cerrone Houdini" meanwhile dives headfirst into the 70s with its string sweeps. But there are two things that Goldfrapp excel at, and they're both on this album. The first is pure pop pleasure, and the ridiculously joyous "Happiness" delivers this in spades. The second is melancholy beauty, and "Some People" has this base covered. The SEVENTH TREE continues to grow in my heart.
