These group performances represent some of the more commercial releases of the folk revival. Beginning with Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene" performed by The Weavers and the hit "Tom Dooley" by The Kingston Trio continuing through to recordings by Jim Kweskin's Jug Band, this collection demonstrates how more "authentic" and "traditional" folk songs were sanitized and popularized for mass consumption

Country music today is filled with so many small town stereotypes that it just doesn’t feel real, but Evan Felker’s songwriting is so lived in that you know he’s done and felt these things. The Turnpike Troubadours obviously know a ton about small town living. Before the Devil Knows We’re Dead. Every Girl, the debut track off of the Turnpike Troubadours’ sophomore album Diamonds & Gasoline, is probably Evan Felker at his lyrical best. The song weaves in descriptions about why his girl is like every girl I’ve ever known. Good Lord Lorrie, from the Turnpike Troubadours’ third album Goodbye Normal Street, is yet another fantastic representation of small town living and love gone array. The protagonist and his girlfriend, Lorrie, are burning fast for each other despite the disapproval of her family. Life isn’t easy for the two of them, but they’re in love – until they aren’t anymore by the song’s end.
One of the most popular present-day fadistas is Ana Moura, born in Santarém Portugal. She has been on the scene for a number of years – her first album Guarda-me a Vida na Mão (Keep My Life in Your Hand) was released in 2003 – but her career really took off in 2007 with the album Para Além da Saudade (Beyond Saudade). Several of Carlos do Carmo’s albums have hit gold and platinum status and his music has broadened the boundaries of the fado culture, adding jazz influences and lyrics from prominent pieces of Portuguese poetry.
