S&M (an abbreviation of Symphony and Metallica) is a live album by American heavy metal band Metallica, with The San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Kamen. It was recorded on April 21–22, 1999 at The Berkeley Community Theatre. This is the final Metallica album to feature Jason Newsted as Metallica's bassist. S&M contains performances of Metallica songs with additional symphonic accompaniment, which was composed by Michael Kamen, who also conducted the orchestra during the concert

Metallica will play a special concert with The San Francisco Symphony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking collaborative album S&M, the band announced Monday (March 18). The one-night-only show, appropriately titled S&M², is set for Sept. Originally recorded live at The Berkeley Community Theatre in 1999, S&M featured the hard-rock icons performing songs like Master of Puppets, Until It Sleeps and For Whom the Bell Tolls along with symphonic accompaniment composed by conductor Michael Kamen of The San Francisco Symphony.
Like their previous album, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets was recorded at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen with Flemming Rasmussen engineering and serving as co-producer. What made that studio special? Rasmussen told Songfacts: "We had a really kick-ass drum room. Metallica recorded this with the San Francisco Symphony in 1999. That version is on their album, S&M.

Metallica was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles after drummer Lars Ulrich placed an advert in the classifieds newspaper The Recycler, which was answered by singerrhythm guitarist James Hetfield. They were soon joined by lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, who later formed Megadeth after being kicked out of the band, and bassist Ron McGovney, a childhood friend of Hetfield. These two early members were replaced with Cliff Burton (who relocated the band to San Francisco) and ex-Exodus lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett to form the band’s classic line-up .
