Tabla Beat Science was a musical group founded in 1999 by Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. Its style consists of a mixture of Hindustani music, Asian Underground, ambient music, drum and bass and electronica. In 2001 Karsh Kale was approached by super producer Bill Laswell to contribute to a project he was calling Tabla Beat Science. The album would feature the leading tabla artists who were taking the instrument into modern and exciting new contexts.

With their debut CD Tala Matrix, the project known as Tabla Beat Science has essentially taken the rich and time-honored tradition of the tabla (a pair of North Indian hand drums) and fused it with contemporary electronica studio wizardry. Tala Matrix is dedicated to the memory of the late, great, and innovative tabla virtuoso Ustad Alla Rakha (1919-2000). The Tabla Beat Science project is comprised of one of Ustad Alla Rakha's sons, the tabla superman Zakir Hussain.

Every track sounds far to familiar! The tabla, even though I love the sound of a tabla, is constantly playing fast and rapid in sort of drum n bass manner that makes you wish for a pace and tempo change. This is the same for the breakbeats and dub formula which on every track, except for maybe three tracks, you start to feel as if your listening to a slightly altered track with a very familiar pattern formula and direction from the track before it! There are some interesting electronics going on, but unfortunately the tabla, bass, breakbeat keep coming and burying the some good ideas that would have been a pleasure to listen too rather then overly forceful and dependent use of tabla and breaks. 6/10

This is definitely a classic, a real ground breaker. One look at the lineup consisting of precussion legends and todays top sonic manipulators, you know this is guaranteed to be an interesting listen. First off I must say those who thought this had something to do with Indian Classical music will be dissapointed. TBS is an ensemble of top artists who joined to push the boundries to electronic music today. And what an amazing job they do! Straight up, powerful, precussion with tribal beats and Laswell's amazing bass and production. Not to leave out the others, Karsh Kale does some fantastic programming on Palmistry, Talvin singh is trippy on the manipulations. All in all I recommend this to all open-minded listeners who like a bit of tribal, dub, and massive Laswell basslines. 9/10
