Becoming X is the debut studio album by English electronic band Sneaker Pimps. It was first released on 19 August 1996 in the United Kingdom by Clean Up Records and on 25 February 1997 in the United States by Virgin Records. The album marked the only appearance of Kelli Dayton as lead singer before she was asked to leave the band; Chris Corner replaced her for the band's subsequent albums.

Becoming Remixed is a remix album by English electronic band Sneaker Pimps, released on 10 March 1998 by Virgin Records. It serves as a companion piece to the band's 1996 debut Becoming X, and was originally limited to 30,000 copies. Spin Spin Sugar (Armand's Dark Garage Mix)". Walking Zero (Tuff & Jam Unda-Vybe Vocal)". Post-Modern Sleaze (The Salt City Orchestra Nightclub Mix)". Spin Spin Sugar (Armand's Bonus Dub)". Post-Modern Sleaze (Reprazent Mix)". 6 Underground (Perfecto Mix)".

The beginning of ‘Becoming X’ would only be described as a variation of pop hooks with driving guitars such as Low Place Like Home and Tesko Suicide. Other tracks seem to take a page out of Portishead’s book with 6 Underground and Spin Spin Sugar. The Sneaker Pimp’s debut offers alluring transformations that ping-pong between various atmospheres.

Becoming X is one of the most engaging byproducts of post-Portishead trip-hop. While the Sneaker Pimps don't have the doomed romanticism of Portishead or the nasty experimental tendencies of Tricky, they have a cool sense of pop hooks and an edgier guitar attack than their predecessors. Tesko Suicide" moves along with jagged guitars and rhythms, while "6 Underground" is coolly detached postmodern soul. Becoming X creates an airy, urban atmosphere, and while the record begins to unravel toward the end, it is an exciting, entrancing listen. Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Becoming X. Sneaker Pimps. 96 Web homepage Record label: Clean Up, Virgin Genre(s): Rock. 70 Music-Critic Score How the Music Critic Score works. This laid back hip pop track, which I am sure many of the readers have heard, features a low, driving bassline, a simple keyboard lick, and above all, Kelli's vocals. The album starts out with that cool bass sound familiar to the Sneaker Pimps on "Low Place Like Home". This repeating bassline/melody is one of the catchiest on the album

[CD] Track 11 "How Do" is credited as TRADITIONAL; does anyone remember a possibly earlier (pre-1996) cover-version by ROSE MCDOWALL on a post-STRAWBERRY SWITCHBLADE album by one of these bands: CURRENT 93, or DEATH IN JUNE, or SPELL, or SORROW, or BOYD & FRIENDS, etc., etc.??? My memory has gone to sh*t, but I remember Rose's version as being "dreamier", and more tragic. A very unrequited song, for sure...

Can anyone tell me if there is a remaster of the ORIGINAL 96 release pressing? Many thanks

skyjettttt
No remaster as of yet. There were plans to re-release it in hi-res and in surround sound a few years ago, but they never got around to doing it. To be honest, it still sounds pretty good so I doubt they'd do it, plus all One Little Indian Records seem to do is flock about with Bjork all the time (not that Bjork is bad, but they could do more and focus on their other artists).

RUsich155
this bootleg actually sounds pretty good on side A except for a deep scratch that runs through the 4th song, I asked the seller for a new one but they said it would also have the scratch. Side B sounds terrible because the grooves aren't deep enough, so it's quiet and there's little to no bass. All of the songs are the original versions though. I got a partial refund and I'll use it to buy the original LP.

Bukelv
Yeah, you bought a fake repress of the first, 1LP edition. One Little Indian released it officially on 2, 180gram LP's in 2016, but it's actually pressed with the 1997 re-release tracks (some are remixes).

Ganthisc
Regarding this boxset, I have seen all the items contained, sold separately on eBay over the years, nowadays they are hard to come across, pretty much because any search with the term ''Sneaker Pimps'' brings up the American touring act of the same name. If anyone has this, please upload more images to it

Yggfyn
It'll take me a bit to get familiar and comfortable with the remixes and alterations... but the pressing itself is fantastic! I love electronic music and DMM pressings.

Nalmetus
direct metal mastered. not ideal for quality sound. dont bother. seriously why the hell make it 2 LPs when youre going to do DMM. that is for LACQUER CUTS. if youre going to do DMM you can put it all on one LP.

Phain
Dude DMM doesn't have anything to do with RPM or how much can be fit on a side.

Nalme
25 mins/side at 45rpm? Don't know what Crosley you're listening on but that would sound like crud

Tolrajas
I'm not hardcore sneaker Pimps fan but love this album and though it is different sounding it is more appealing to me than the original, A directors alternate cut if you will. People want the old album and don't want new? That seems redundant. If anything people should be happy for a "NEW" Listening experience from their fave bands. The sound on my copy is deep, velvety and rich...I love it!

Morlurne
Hi awall621, could you please tell me which version of 'Spin Spin Sugar' (Radio Mix) is on this LP? I found two on youtube: this one would be OK with me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2VXe_jUxlY&list=OLAK5uy_nLy_pwiMNQrg5EE1yzsLPdkRrD2RUpGZs but there's at least one other which I don't like at all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snZ-CZb_FV8 ( (KRBE Radio Edit). Thanks a lot in advance!

Mr.mclav
The big flaw is three of the tracks are remixes without mentioning this anywhere, glad I was able to cancel my copy.

Kulalas
The 2016 vinyl re-issue is the same master plate used for the 2008 Sneaker Pimps One Little Indian vinyl re-releases, there's nothing different here.

Lanadrta
Does anyone know if this is the same as the reissue with the remixed versions of some of the songs?

Best West
thanks what a money grab the green record is arrg

Brightfury
I have this (although mine is a marbled green record). It is indeed the 1997 reissue with remixed versions of 6 Underground, Spin Spin Sugar and Post-Modern Sleaze which is disappointing.

Vit
The bootleg copy does have the remixes on it, unfortunately. Its the same version of Post Modern Sleaze as the 2016 repressing.

Wishamac
My boyfriend has official vinyl released from One Little Indian and they don't list the songs as remixes so when he listened to it he emailed them. They told him that is the official release and the songs aren't remixed, but they aren't versions from the original release either so it's all very sad. I'll reach out if we find a good bootleg or other without remixes.

Tujar
ya would like to know too, I actually think i may have ordered an unofficial on ebay. Ill let ya know asap if it comes in. It is on one LP tho which I hope the remixes are off. So disappointed hearing their remix of post modern slease arrg.

Utchanat
I'm sad because I'm still used to listen the original versions, even if remixes are good, it is not the album I listen hundred times. Very confusing feeling for me !!!! It's like remastering the Starwars movies every 2 years !!!

iSlate
100% this. I was pissed that several sings were inferior to the OG album. Lame. Not sure whether to sell it or overpay for fucking singles that were on the original album.

Eta
I actually prefer the Post-Modern Sleaze (Flight From Nashville Mix) & 6 Underground (Nellee Hooper Edit) versions over the originals, so this is great for me!

????????????????????????
There are some marbled green versions circulating. Anyone have info on these?

Broadraven
The front of my copy looks blurry, was it just scanned through a printer or something?

Breder
Infact, this is official. Just checked and it does have the printed inners and a download card - guess they don't have the master prints and just used a scan for the cover art.

Dynen
Mine is like this too, sure smells like a bootleg, especially with the speed being wrong and other label errors.

Quphagie
Guess it's because they didn't planned to do vinyls in 1996 the sleeve master is surely a CD booklet

Armin
Isn't the entire point of a reissue to give the original record the props it deserves? I cannot understand why they would release this with different versions of songs. I don't like it — especially since there was no mention of this when I bought it direct from the label. In addition to the misprints mentioned above, Post-Modern Sleaze is at the end of side B, not the beginning of side C like the sleeve says. It's like someone designed the label and someone else designed the sleeve. And they were approved by two different people. Not really a huge deal though. That said, this sounds as good or better than any CD version I've heard. Very little noise. No distortion. I'm happy to own it on vinyl.

Bliss
This reissue is crap. The bass and hihats are distorted compared to the digital copies on CD. Someone used a bad source or isn't familiar with how to master for vinyl. The Discogs sellers must be aware of this for prices to remain high. Avoid.

Ynonno
Read the other replies. I think some of us got a boot and it wasn't advertised as such. Remixes, mismatched 33/45rpm labels, etc. It stinks.

Ynneig
wonder if you got a boot, no distortion at all on my rig and the bass is super clean, deep and powerful.Goldring GR-2 (1012GX cart)Acoustic Energy Aelite3 towersParasound Zphono Onkyo TX-NR3010 amp

Roru
So this "misprint" refers to the 33rpm, it's actually the same DMM as the 2008 @ 45rpm. Concerned it might not be as good? Well I haven't heard the original 45rpm but based on the first four tracks I've listened to, and even despite a couple light pops here and there (I was listening very loud), I would highly recommend you IMMEDIATELY order a copy of this (at the time of writing it's still in stock at the original label's site and Amazon UK as well as Discogs market) and get ready for sonic bliss. Holy smokes does this one sound good, the CD has great low end too but man once you hear this 45rpm mastering it's over.

Kaim
This pressing sounds perfectly clear to me. Bass sounds great and not picking up any of the hi-range distortion that can kill 90s reissues. They did a great job. I did notice that this mix is more "present" than the CD, which I always thought sounded kind of muddy. Some of the filters they used are easier to hear. Roll On is a great example where there is a ton of new texture in the mix. Might sound like distortion depending on the sound system? Not sure.

Ishnllador
I'm with you - I don't hear any distortion and it sounds amazing to my ears. Shrug. To each their own I guess?

Oveley
Just imported this from the UK. Disappointing distortion across the range, poor source.

Malalanim
i own this, just checked it out this looks rite 2 me

SARAND
does this have the original tracks not remixes just wondering

DarK-LiGht
Among the classic Trip Hop/Downtempo production releases. Ms. Dayton's ethereal vocals captured me from the first time I heard "6 Underground". The rest of the CD is very solid. From the naughty-sultry "Roll On" to the haunting and beautiful "How Do" to the ubiquitous Nellee Hooper version of "6 Underground" Becoming X is a wonderful showcase of vocals and solid production....

Fordrekelv
all right as far as trip-hop goes. some tracks are really good, but some stray from the sound the band should carry through the entire album. i actually bought this thinking the Spin Spin Sugar version was the long dance remix, but i was wrong. could be improved, but still not too bad.
