String Quartet In A Major Op 41 No 3. (26:44). 1. Andante Espressivo - Allegro Molto Moderato. (29:49).

The peerless Takacs Quartet recently nominated for a Gramophone award for their second disc of Brahms's string quartets, continue their exploration of the Romantic chamber music tradition with this disc of Schumann. The Piano Quintet is by far Schumann's most popular chamber work and one of the most beloved works in the genre. Schumann was the first romantic composer to pair the piano with the string quartet. Schumann studied the string quartets of Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn and his quartet Op. 41 No. 3 demonstrates these influences.

Shostakovich: Piano Quintet & String Quartet No. 2; with Takács Quartet. Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57 (1940). Piano Quintet in E♭ major, Op. 44 (1842); Hamelin appears in the Quintet only. Marc-André Hamelin: Étude No. 3 in B minor "after Paganini-Liszt" (1993). Felix Blumenfeld: Étude pour la main gauche seule, Op. 36. Jakob Gimpel: The Song of the Soldiers of the Sea (The Marines' Hymn), Concert Paraphrase after Jacques Offenbach (1942). 6 in D minor "Esercizio per pianoforte, Omaggio a Domenico Scarlatti" (1992). Jules Massenet: Valse folle (1898). Moritz Moszkowski: Études de virtuosité in A♭ minor, Op.

As it is, Hamelin is sometimes just a bit too blunt – not matter of fact, exactly, but at crucial points just lacking the degree of expressive give and take that breathes such life into the Takács's playing in both works.

Takács String Quartet. Primary Artist, String Quartet.

FLAC/Takács Quartet & Marc-André Hamelin - Schumann: String Quartet O. 4 (2009) /01 String Quartet in A major, O. :I. Andante espressivo–Allegro molto moderato.

Marc-André Hamelin (piano). Hamelin scampers and thunders by turns but not once does he upstage the string-players. That this disc simply gets.
