Teaming with twentysomething Welsh singer/songwrter JP Jones - rumor has it the relationship was more than professional, a whisper supported by Hynde singing I’ve found the perfect lover but he’s half my age on the album opener - and his band of shaggy Libertines disciples, Hynde loosens herself up considerably. Over years of touring, the Pretenders wound up as a precision-tuned machine, so it’s a welcome change to hear Hynde with a band.

Chrissie Hynde's album with former lover JP Jones is a bit of a damp squib, says Hermione Hoby. She's referring to her collaborator, the Welsh singer JP Jones, with whom she abandoned a relationship after deciding that 27 years posed too problematic an age gap. Sadly, rather like the romance that wasn't, most of these songs don't quite take off: Hynde sounds supreme throughout, but even her cool can't save a track as cheesy as "Australia", while Jones's grizzled croak often bursts in with alarming abruptness.
