Arnold Martyn Wyndham-Read (born 23 August 1942, Sussex) is an English folk singer, who was a collector and singer of Australian folk music. He lived and worked in Australia from 1958 to 1967 and was subsequently a regular visitor to the country. Martyn Wyndham-Read grew up on a Sussex farm; he heard the village blacksmith singing local songs.
The use of instrumental music in war is also covered, old favourites are re-appraised, and some bizarre stories unfold. To find material for his book, the author has combed the memoirs of the soldiers of Cromwell, Wolfe, Marlborough, Wellington, Roberts and Buller, to name but a few. The result is a book of value to the historian and musician, and one which should delight the general reader. Album: The album Songs and Music of The Redcoats inspired by Lewis Winstock’s book.
Lewis Winstock in this pioneer work investigates the real music of war. His book contains a long narrative. This book really is a super piece of history about what the real soldiers sang and not something that was played by a military band. One person found this helpful.
