Dry is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician PJ Harvey, released on Too Pure Records on 30 March 1992. The album was recorded at The Icehouse, a local studio in Yeovil, United Kingdom. The first 5000 LPs and first 1000 CDs included demo versions of the album's tracks and Dry was subsequently released in the United States on Indigo Records in the US. Dry is the debut studio album by Polly Jean Harvey, released on 30 March 1992. So, I put everything I had into it. It was a very extreme record. It was a great joy for me to be able to make it. I never thought I’d have that opportunity, so I felt like I had to get everything on it as well as I possibly could, because it was probably my only chance. It felt very extreme for that reason.

I was 13 years old when I started to realise I no longer related to the pop music of my childhood (Now That's What I Call Music Volumes 38 – 45, basically). Those artists had good hair and relentless pep. I didn't. At some point between flirting with nu-metal, pop punk and UK garage I discovered PJ Harvey, who was strutting around in a white catsuit on MTV2 and singing spooky love songs to scarecrow-like men (my thoughts on Thom Yorke have change. lightly)

It’s this androgyny that PJ Harvey seems to toy with, and is ultimately what makes 'Dry' such engrossing and compelling listening. When I watch interviews with Polly Jean, it’s often hard to imagine how this elfin beauty, diffident and stepped in modesty, can produce a sound so powerfully raw, deep, and masculine. From the outset, it’s clear there is an ironic bent to some of her songs. It’s probably obvious that I think this album is pretty good, although it’s not faultless. Some of the song structures can at times seem slightly formulaic, using a steady, looping rhythm and a loud/soft dynamic as a base model, like on 'Hair' and 'Water'. Furthermore, although the latter song is not necessarily bad -especially with its interesting 5/4 timing-, it seems too similar in structure to 'Fountain', making it an odd choice to follow.
