Released September 28, 1987. Come on Pilgrim Tracklist. 9K. 2. Vamos (pilgrim) Lyrics. Come On Pilgrim is the debut EP by the Pixies, released by 4AD Records in September 1987. The recordings which comprise this EP were taken verbatim from the band’s demo tape (often referred to as The Purple Tape). 4AD co-founder Ivo Watts-Russell had a history of bands suffering from a diminished energy when re-recording their demos, so he decided to simply take the best songs from The Purple Tape and release them as they were. 4AD’s graphic designer, Vaughan Oliver, paired the band with British photographer Simon Larbalestier for the album’s packaging. Come On Pilgrim is the first cover of a five-year partnership the band held with Larbalestier, who designed all their record sleeves for 4AD.
Amazingly, the Pixies' 1987 debut EP, Come on Pilgrim, was compiled from the quickly, inexpensively made demo tape - paid for by Black Francis' dad - the band made at Boston's legendary Fort Apache studio soon after they formed. 4AD was so taken with the tape that they released eight of the songs as this mini-album.
Surfer Rosa is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in March 1988 on the British label 4AD. It was produced by Steve Albini. Surfer Rosa contains many of the elements of Pixies' earlier output, including Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico. It includes references to mutilation and voyeurism alongside experimental recording techniques and a distinctive drum sound.

It’s been thirty years since the release of Surfer Rosa – a record made up of rage, religion, gore, incest and superheroes named Tony – a debut album so good that it’s since seen as a masterpiece
And Come on Pilgrim is my very favourite Pixies' album. To me it makes total sense packaging these three albums together. They are not meant to be a Pixies retrospective at all (get the massive Minotaur Box Set for the definitive retrospective - an astounding 4AD acheivement on all levels). These three albums together represent the nascent Pixies at their finest, with a live concert recording their sound at that time
The Pixies’ first major release wasn’t quite an album, but it was longer than an EP. It was something more, but also something less – according to the producer – than a demo tape. And it didn’t even land an initial release in the band’s home country. In 1987, Come On Pilgrim marked a weird beginning to a weird rock ’n’ roll band. The group out of Massachusetts had formed a few years earlier, starting with a college collaboration between guitar players Charles Thompson IV and Joey Santiago. Kim Deal joined up after famously being the only one to answering Thompson’s ad for a bassist with equal.
