The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier), symphonic scherzo for orchestra. On January 3, 1897, the premiere of Dukas' great Symphony in C met with a cool reception. An impressive Beethovenian overture, Polyeucte (inspired by Corneille's play), had been heard in 1892, the year in which Dukas began his career as a critic, covering productions of Wagner operas in London. Behind him lay an undistinguished apprenticeship at the Paris Conservatoire and a year's military service. Strauss: Sinfonica Domestica; Ravel: La Valse; Dukas: L'Apprenti Sorcier.

Three were all with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the other two were with the New York y Orchestra. The majority of the performance included in the concert given on 9 September 1954 in the Usher Hall during the Edinburgh Festival has already appeared on CD and I can state with some confidence that another broadcast which was given in London’s Royal Albert Hall on 11 May 1953 will be released some time during 2017. Cantelli only ever conducted the Second Suite with the three dances – The Neighbours’ Dance, The Miller’s Dance and The Final Dance from de Falla’s ballet music for The Three Cornered Hat. Although one cannot be absolutely certain, this could well be the first time that a live performance of this de Falla by Cantelli has been issued on CD.
Sergei Prokofiev began work on his Symphony No. 1 in D major (Op. 25) in 1916, but wrote most of it in 1917, finishing work on September 10. It is written in loose imitation of the style of Haydn (and to a lesser extent, Mozart), and is widely known as the Classical Symphony, a name given to it by the composer. It premiered on April 21, 1918 in Petrograd, conducted by Prokofiev himself, and has become one of his most popular and beloved works.
